Door Canopies & Shop Front Canopies

Canopy Sales, Design & Installation

Canopy Fitters & Installers

We design, fabricate and fit canopies for front doors, shopfronts, garages and patios, built to measure in aluminium, GRP, timber or fixed-frame fabric styles such as a Dutch or dome canopy. Every front door canopy and shop front canopy we make is cut and framed to your opening, not pulled off a shelf, so the fit and the finish match the building it sits on. Whether you need a single porch canopy or a full run of shop front and commercial canopies, our fitters handle design, fabrication and installation from one workshop.

Front Door Canopies

Front Door Canopy Installation

Front door canopies do a simple job well. They keep rain off your step, shelter whoever's waiting at the door, and stop water pooling against the frame below. We build ours from aluminium extrusion reinforced with drop-forged steel brackets, so the frame holds its shape in wind rather than flexing at the joints.

Fit is worked out from your specific doorway, not a standard size chart. We measure the opening, the wall type and the projection needed for useful cover, then fabricate to those numbers before anything is cut or drilled. Installation then follows a survey to confirm fixing points, checking the wall is solid masonry or a suitable lintel rather than render alone.

A well-fitted canopy also protects the door itself. UV exposure and standing rainwater are two of the biggest causes of early paint and timber failure on entrance doors, and a properly sized canopy cuts down on both over the years that follow.

Shop Front & Commercial Canopies

Shop Canopy Fitters

A canopy over a shop entrance does more than shelter the doorway, and there's a fair bit to weigh up before choosing one.

  • Sized to suit the full width of your shopfront or just the entrance bay, depending on the layout.
  • Built with a valance or fascia panel that carries signage without needing a separate sign board.
  • Finished to match or contrast with your existing shopfront colours and brickwork.

Our fitters work around trading hours where possible, so a retail unit rarely needs to close for the fitting. We can also survey outside opening hours if that suits your business better.

Aluminium & GRP Door canopy

Aluminium & GRP Door Canopies

Fibreglass Door Canopies

Most of our canopies are built on an aluminium frame, light enough to fit without heavy structural support but strong enough to carry wind and snow loading when specified correctly.

  • GRP roof panels are moulded, seamless and very low maintenance, with no joints for water to find.
  • They come in a smooth gloss or a textured finish, across a range of standard colours.
  • Fibreglass is a common choice where a solid, weatherproof roof matters more than natural light through the canopy.

Glazed roof options are also available where you'd rather let daylight through, and both roof types can be specified in a colour that matches the frame or contrasts with it.

Glass & Timber Canopy Options

Wooden Front Door Canopies

Not every property suits an aluminium and GRP canopy. On period properties and traditional shopfronts, a timber-framed canopy with a glazed or slate-effect roof often sits better visually. We build these to the same measured, made-to-order standard as our aluminium range, so the finish is just as durable even though the material looks softer.

Glass roof panels let daylight through to the doorway below, which suits porches and entrances that would otherwise feel dark under a solid roof. We use toughened, laminated glazing rather than standard glass for safety, since it needs to withstand wind loading and the occasional stray branch or ball.

Wooden front door canopies are usually finished in a factory-applied stain or paint system before installation, which holds up better over time than painting on site once the canopy is already fitted.

Canopies Over Front Doors

Canopies for Exterior Doors

A canopy doesn't need to be large to be effective, and it suits more than just the main front entrance.

  • Suits front doors, side doors, back doors and garden room entrances alike.
  • Can be fitted as a standalone canopy or matched to an existing porch or entrance feature.
  • Available in a projection to suit tight courtyards as well as open frontages.

We size every exterior door canopy to the specific opening rather than offering one off-the-shelf option, and the same design and material choices used on a main entrance apply here too.

Garage Door Canopies

Canopy Garage Door Installation

Garages are exposed to the same weather as a front door, often with less shelter, so a canopy above the opening earns its keep quickly.

  • Keeps water away from up-and-over and sectional door mechanisms, which reduces long-term wear.
  • Gives useful covered standing room when loading a car boot in the rain.
  • Can be fitted in a colour to match the garage door or the main house canopy.

Installation follows the same survey-then-fit process as our other door canopies, checking the wall construction above the garage opening before any fixings go in.

Patio Door Canopies

Canopies for Patio Doors

Patio doors are usually wider than a standard entrance door, so a canopy here needs a wider span and a frame strong enough to hold that width without sagging in the middle.

We size every patio canopy to the full width of the opening, whether that's a bifold, sliding or French door set, and can extend the projection where you want genuine shelter rather than a decorative strip. The finish is chosen to complement conservatory, orangery or standard house brickwork, so it reads as part of the building rather than an add-on.

A patio door canopy also helps keep the glass cleaner for longer, since it cuts down on rain streaking and dirt splash-back hitting the doors directly.

Canopy Colours & Modern Design

Contemporary & Victorian Canopy Styles

Canopy design has moved on from a single standard shape, and the right style depends on the building it's going on.

  • Contemporary, flat-roofed designs suit modern extensions, new-build homes and commercial units.
  • Traditional Victorian-style box canopies with decorative brackets suit period terraces and shopfronts.
  • Frame and roof colours can be specified separately, so the finish works with existing brickwork or render.

We'll talk through which style suits your property during the survey, alongside the material and colour options that go with it.

Canopy Prices & Quotes

Door Canopy Cost

Canopy pricing depends on size, material, roof type and how complex the fixing is, which is why we always survey before quoting rather than pricing from a size chart alone.

  • Get a written quote based on a site survey, not a phone estimate.
  • Ask what's included: survey, manufacture, installation and any making-good to the wall.
  • Confirm lead time at quote stage, since canopies are made to order rather than held in stock.

A wide shop front or patio canopy in timber will generally cost more than a small aluminium front door canopy, simply because there's more material, more design work and a longer fitting time involved.

Canopy Repairs & Refurbishment

Shop Canopy Repairs

Canopies take a long time to wear out structurally, but roof panels can crack, fixings can work loose, and colours fade with years of UV exposure. Most of these issues can be repaired or refurbished rather than needing a full replacement.

We replace cracked or discoloured GRP and glazing panels without disturbing the rest of the frame, and re-secure and re-seal any fixings that have worked loose over time. For shop canopies in particular, repairs can usually be scheduled outside peak trading hours so the shopfront stays open throughout.

Refurbishment is generally quicker and cheaper than starting again with a new canopy, provided the underlying frame is still sound, and it's worth having a canopy checked before it reaches the point of visible damage.

Residential & Commercial Canopies

Domestic Door Canopies

The same build quality applies whether a canopy is going over a single domestic front door or across a full commercial frontage, though the scale and specification differ.

  • Domestic canopies are typically sized for one door and a modest projection.
  • Commercial canopies are often specified around signage, footfall shelter and public access requirements.
  • Both are built to the same aluminium-frame, weatherproof standard.

We quote domestic and commercial canopies through the same survey-led process, adjusting the specification rather than the standard of build.

Bespoke Canopy Design & Fabrication

Custom Door Canopy Design

Standard shapes don't always fit an unusual opening, an awkward wall angle, or a listed building with its own requirements. Where that's the case, we design and fabricate a bespoke canopy from scratch.

  • Hand-bent brackets and custom frame shapes to fit around corners, alcoves or non-standard widths.
  • Design worked out from an on-site survey rather than a catalogue template.
  • Suited to listed buildings, conservation areas and other non-standard fixing situations.

Bespoke work takes longer to manufacture, so it's worth factoring in extra lead time when planning the rest of a wider project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a canopy installation take?

Once your canopy has been surveyed, designed and manufactured, a standard front door or shop front canopy is usually fitted in a single day. Manufacture lead time varies by size and material, so it's worth confirming this at the quote stage rather than assuming a fixed timescale for your project.

Do I need planning permission for a canopy?

Most small domestic canopies fall under permitted development, but this depends on your property, whether it's listed, and your local planning authority's rules. Always check with your local council before ordering, particularly for shopfronts, conservation areas or listed buildings, where the rules can be stricter.

What's the difference between a canopy and an awning?

A canopy has its own self-supporting frame fixed directly to the wall, whether that's a rigid roof in aluminium, GRP, glass or timber, or a fixed-frame fabric design like a Dutch, dome or wedge canopy. An awning extends on folding arms from a mounting box and is built for regular full retraction as conditions change. Canopies suit permanent or semi-permanent cover with little day-to-day operation, while awnings suit flexible shading you wind in and out as needed.

Can a canopy be fitted to any wall?

Canopies need a solid fixing point, usually masonry or a structural lintel. Render, cladding or a weak wall on its own isn't enough to carry the load safely. A survey will always check what's behind the surface before any fixing points are confirmed, and we'll flag if extra bracing is needed.

How do I keep a canopy roof clean?

GRP and glazed roof panels are generally low maintenance and can be cleaned with warm water and a soft brush a couple of times a year. Avoid abrasive cleaners or pressure washers directly on GRP, as they can dull the gloss finish and scratch the surface over time.

Will a canopy fade or discolour over time?

Some fading is normal after years of UV exposure, particularly on darker colours. Good quality GRP and powder-coated aluminium resist this far better than untreated timber, which is why frame and roof material matter for long-term appearance.

Can an old or damaged canopy be repaired instead of replaced?

In most cases, yes. Cracked roof panels, faded colours and loose fixings can usually be repaired or refurbished without removing the whole structure, which is generally cheaper and quicker than a full replacement.

What size canopy do I need?

Size depends on the opening you're covering and how much shelter you actually want. A narrow canopy will keep rain off a doorstep, while a deeper projection gives standing or queuing space too. A site survey is the most reliable way to confirm the right size.

Can a canopy include lighting or signage?

Yes, many shop front and commercial canopies are built with a valance or fascia panel designed to carry signage, and lighting can be specified at the design stage if needed. Let your installer know at quote stage so any wiring is built in rather than added on afterwards.

How much does a canopy cost?

Cost depends on size, material, roof type and fixing complexity, so pricing varies from project to project. The most reliable way to get an accurate figure is a site survey followed by a written quote, rather than a general estimate over the phone.
